Dr. Temple Grandin will present her highly creative and scientifically acclaimed work on autism and animal husbandry. Through her autism, she has cultivated the ability to think in pictures and developed an acute sense of the emotional life of animals. In order to understand animals, Grandin says, one has to get away from language. She has harnessed her unique abilities to develop ethical guidelines and technologies for the care and slaughter of cattle and other livestock. Grandin will explore issues of animal welfare from a practical perspective.

Dr. Grandin's visit is in conjunction with the course "The Bull in the China Shop: The Oxen at the Intersection of Nature, Society, and Religion" (REL 407/507), taught by Professor Mark Unno. The course was developed during his 2009-2010 Coleman-Guitteau Teaching Fellowship.

  • @CJOKUSAP Dude be someone to look up to don´t leave her/him out. Autistic children are very easy to freeze out. As having asperger I say, talk normal to them but let them be have their interests.

  • I bet all the people who made fun of her feel dumb now

  • I find you and your work a absolutely amazing ! I am so very grateful that you extend yourself to all of us and give us a chance to see what you see . I hope that you continue to share yourself and your knowledge with the world , thank you !

  • @misspinkpunkykat That' not true; we understand emotions very well, better than the norm. But we have trouble facially expressing our own emotions, some autistics even reflect other people's emotions, even if it isn't what they are really feeling. The idea that we 'simply don't understand', is where misunderstanding comes from.

  • im autistic and im proud! i dont care what they negatively say about me! i just well... want to fit in but with everything they sayi probably wont for quite some time...

  • @CJOKUSAP That's a good way to teach them. I think some kids with autism also just don't have a concept of "rude" or "nice". I think this is an example of not understanding empathy.

  • @misspinkpunkykat --- Everytime they go to open their mouth or do something they enjoy, interrupt them. See how they like it.

  • But what if a child simply dosen't care that they are being "rude"?

  • Bits of any kind should be outlawed.

  • People don't see it becuase normal people are stupid.

  • i would be very glad if i could ever talk to her she is brilhant
