This is Debian 1.1 running on an ancient Targa laptop from the early '90s. The installation was surprisingly smooth and straightforward: this is me pattering over the top and the boot sequence, followed by me demonstrating the installed software (of which there is practically none) and then shutting it down.

Apologies for the very quiet sound, but I had a rather nasty sore throat when this was recorded. You can find more details here: http://crashedpips.com/2009/04/12/antique-linux-on-an-antique-pc

  • Hey, antique pervert, confess, you were stroking on it, right?

  • @Lex5151 wow I don't even

  • 1990:

    linux -> comand promt

    dos -> comand promt

    both where young and stable as a rock

  • @etaxalo In 1990, Windows (then a GUI shell on top of DOS) was already at version 3, and Linux didn't exist.

    Neither, therefore, were particularly stable.

  • This video is unwatchable because of the camera bouncing up and down the whole time. C'mon, shooting a video of a computer screen ain't rocket science! Hold the freakin' camera still!

  • @SeltsamerAttraktor no it doesn't, Pico is the best.

  • BLASPHEMIA! How dare you to speak of VI in this way? It is my favourite editor and beats anything else.

  • Keep good care of this system, for that you may tell your grandchildren the story of how primitive Linux used to be in the previous millenia.

  • I remember my local autism support group was giving out laptops to autistic people years back and I got a targa exactly like this one. Wasn't fast, but it was on the Internet (once I figured out peak and offpeak phone times) I would wait until 9pm at night, ring up the ISP and go dialing. It wasn't till several letters later they figured out it was me only wanting to save some money.

  • That is not even old. I have laptop from '80s. And i made it to tablet.
