EuroNews: Belgrade brands Kosovo's independence illegal
Just minutes after the Kosovan parliament voted, the Serb prime minister, Vojislav Kostunica, gave his reaction, branding the move "illegal". Referring repeatedly to the province of Kosovo, he said:
"The true foundations of this puppet state are to be found in the bombs with which NATO destroyed Serbia. The truth must be told - behind this puppet regime we find NATO's military interests. This is confirmed in the Ahtisaari plan. This is how a puppet state was able to be created and it will remain a puppet state for all eternity even if western nations sacrifice international order and risk sacrificing peace.
The President of the United States who is responsible for this violence and the Europeans who have followed his lead will be written in black letters into the history of Serbia and also into the history of international rights and international order based on those rights."
Kostunica said Serbia, as the sovereign power of Kosovo, annulled all decisions made by the Kosovan parliament concerning independence and would annul all decisions arising from what he described as "this illegal act".
In the same context, he said Belgrade also annulled the European Union's decision to send what he called an illegal mission to the province - a decision, he said, that proved once more the "powerlessness" of Europe.
