A.L.I. (associazione liberi improvvisatori) is a project conceptualized by saxophonist/ composer Alfredo Ponissi in 2005. The group is formed by a nucleus of bassist/composer Stefano Solani, drummer/composer Jimmy Weinstein, drummer Paolo Franciscone. Other artists have been associated in past projects.
From its inception, the group has developed jazz and new music around forms that require complex notation. The structures are open, multi-dimensional and multi-functional. This research, in accordance with R. Buckminster Fullers philosophy of ephemeralization has brought Ponissi to theorize a system of instantaneous composition/improvisation which he calls Shapes of Instant Mind Network (S-IMN). The trio has developed the concept over a period of 3 years, participating in festivals and debuted the work The Mountains, The River, The Towns, dedicated to an Italian region: Piedmont, in Tokyo at the festival Primavera Italiana in May of 2007, hosted by the Italian Institute of Culture.
In 2008-2009 A.L.I. developed a project 12 Chains To The Moon This project was initiated by an encounter with visual artist Roberto Gianinetti.
Inspired by the work of R. Buckminster Fuller, 12 Chains To The Moon develops by means of three compositional vehicles: Intuition, Geodesic Mind, Livingry and Ephemeralization. Original compositions by Alfredo Ponissi combined with the installations of Roberto Gianinetti conceptualize an interactive performance.
The set represents a Dymaxion Musical House, made of different movable-aerial geometric structures including pentagons, hexagons, pyramids, tubes as well as other inventive objects. The Dymaxion Musical House is inhabited by the trio and their respective instruments. The space is filled with light rays, sounds, molecular streams made of musical notes, and pulsations sent into outer space in this homage to Fuller.
