that does not look like flex cap stay bolt problem to me? I think what your seeing is steam leaking from an inspection plug for looking into the boiler at the crown sheet? Looks like there are several of them there in that area?

lifeorail thanks for the information on firing these engines.....very interesting....fired many engines in my day, sure would like to have a chance at these!! with the poor quality coal in s.a. and having to carry a thick bed in the fire box, do you find that these engines clinker up very bad or not? Thanks,

doesnt look like it has a stoker engine from what i can see??? cant believe you would have to hand fire such a big firebox with only a shovel!! geeeeez, the fireman sure earns his money,

Nice footage!! Early signs of flexible stay cap trouble are evident with the steam leaking under the firebox cladding. Pity.

Hoppercar, The 15CAs were all hand fired and were magical locos to fire. They were big fireboxes but not as big as the larger 15F locos. Some 15Fs were hand fired but others had mechanical stokers. When I was based in Germiston shed most drivers were given their own regular loco and mine was always a hand fired 15F. They have 63sq ft fireboxes and were magical to fire bught mighty hard work. My regular driver always said "all steam locos have mechanical stokers, only difference is mine talks"

Is it running out of steam? At least the fireman seems to shovel coal on quite a phase. Or is it just uphill?

@kaupunkimoukari She is right up at the red mark with steam pressure but the coal in SA is very poor quality and so the locos were built with rather large fireboxes to cope with the poor coal. On a normal passenger train one would normally pack the firebox with about 170 shovels of coal before you even left the station After that it was a round of about 15 or so every 3 to 5minutes when working fast. Best job I ever had
