FedEx plane crashes, explodes on landing in Tokyo - raw video

Monday, 23 March 2009, Tokyo - A FedEx Corp (FDX.N) cargo plane caught in a gust of wind crashed and burst into flames as it landed at Japan's Narita airport on Monday, killing the two crew and closing the main runway at the busy gateway to Tokyo.

Airlines diverted flights to other airports as the longest runway of two was closed.

"We have information that strong winds caused the plane to divert from the runway," a Narita Airport spokeswoman said, adding the plane had been on a FedEx cargo flight from Guangzhou, China.

The FedEx plane landed hard, tipped onto its left wing and burst into flames, video of the crash on public broadcaster NHK showed.

A bright orange fireball and black billowing smoke engulfed the plane as it flipped and skidded off the runway.

Firefighters sprayed foam onto the broken remains of the plane with its wheels in the air.

A hospital official said the two crew had died.

Narita airport said the plane was an MD-11, a freighter made by McDonnell Douglas, part of Boeing Co (BA.N).

An airport official said it was unclear how long the main runway would be closed at Narita, the main international airport for the Japanese capital.

A spokesman for Japan Airlines Corp (9205.T), Japan's main international airline, said some arriving flights had been diverted to Tokyo's Haneda airport and airports in Nagoya and Osaka.

An All Nippon Airways (9202.T) spokesman said the airline stopped check-in operations at Narita for 10 international flights, including those to New York, Washington and London.

FedEx officials in Japan confirmed it was their company's flight but said they were still checking other information.

Pretty sure that was DHL that was in the mid-air several years ago over Germany... NOT Fedex Danusha7800. And it was an ATC error!!!! You're a complete idiot for not checking your facts!!!! AND Fedex pilot are well known in the industry for being EXCELLENT pilots!

@crazyEmovies Actually it was more error of russian pilots not to follow ATC than ATC itself. Guy in ATC was way overloaded anyway because ATC company chose to make maintenance job when he was working, which disabled many safety features and made his his workload way too much when most other ATC personnel were having a break.

To make whole thing even more tragic one russian man who lost his whole family in crash went and killed that innocent ATC man...
