Please give a listen to this new discovery of mine, Russian-born violinist Ilya Kaler, here playing the Brahms violin concerto in D major with the Bournemouth Orchestra conducted by Pietari Inkinen. Part 1 of 3.
Recently, I had the distinct pleasure of hearing Mr Kaler perform the devilishly difficult Tchaikovsky violin concerto during a wonderful live performance with the local symphony orchestra. Mr Kaler reminds me of Jascha Heifetz in his unfussy virtuosity, but (in my own humble opinion - Heifetz admirers will kill me for saying this) - Mr Kaler puts more heart and emotion into his playing. He creates a sophisticated, elegant and tasteful rendering of these famous pieces, yet his playing feels relaxed and 'just right'. He never overdoes the vibrato, and his tone is a thing of silvery beauty.
What do you all think?
First movement: Allegro non troppo Part 1 of 3.
To hear the concerto's remaining movements, please go online (see below) or to your bricks-and-mortar music store and purchase a copy of this fine CD!
