Let's face it: this singer sang at Covent Garden (not just once) in tough roles. He was admired, not because he was English (a patriotic pride) but because he could sing. His voice was supported, his style used light and shade: in short he was a great singer any standards. I have written criticising the Italian tenor Giuseppe Anselmi - who still is entertaining: but Burke is more: entertaining, a vocal athlete and has a bel canto brain. He was helped by De Lucia after all.

Anyway, never mind where I live! Burke never lost his "correct" training which is of course classical - in the songs he does not croon and everything is supported, yet everything is intimate. The fresh quality of the voice considering he sang some pretty taxing roles on stage is remarkable.

@TAUBERFANLEHAR2 I never knew you were from Lancashire. I am from Westhoughton.

Lovely! A very sweet voice. I would love to have been there. This rendition is the best I've heard by a man. Gem of a song.

I think the chapel has been demolished? I was there about 5 years ago. My family lived on Whalley Road. before moving down to the Midlands where I visit often. As you say small world.
My Mum is from Clayton-le-Moors, Lancs and is always telling me about the concerts at Barnes Square Methodist Church where all these good old songs were sung. Interesting about Tom Burke - just because they can sing doesn't necessarily mean they are nice people, LOL.

Tauberfanlehar - you've done it again. It is so great to be able to enjoy these gorgeous songs with others who appreciate them. Thank you. As I am sure you know, Tom Burke was known as The Lancashire Caruso, and he really does have an Italianate sound.
