Sir Issac Newton notices an apple fall from a tree and then sees the light and writes the second law of universal gravity. A wonderful whirligig carved from wood.

  • That's Great!! I'd really like to see the mechanics. I haven't figured out how you get the apple to reset itself. I have figured out a way to make thee the light bulb/head work. That's the most ingenious Whriligig I've seen!

  • Thanks. Took be a while to make intermittent rather than continous motion. Hard to describe. A hint is in the space seen just below the platform. There is a pull and release mechanism. Gravity...same as Newton thougt causes the apple to fall. The continous motion pulls the apple back up to be released again.

A cam operates a lever to raise the apple.

  • where do you get these

  • There is a lever attached to a ratchet device. In the cycle there is some sort of ratchet release. Does the apple have a lead weight inside?

  • A clever automaton, well done you

  • Thanks. Okay, I think I see it now. The length of the lever is the same length as the string/cord (or at least is the correct length throw for the length of the cord). As is it turns a pin on the lever pulls the cord. It then passes a "trip" that pushes the cord off the pin and the apple drops? Not sure what happened...I "posted" this 2 days ago but it didn't upload.
