KABUL: Rahul Gandhi is, for all intents and purposes, being groomed for high office.
At 36, being a mere MP will just not do for this heir apparent of the Nehru-Gandhi family. His father Rajiv Gandhi, after all, became the country's Prime Minister when he was just 41.
With Priyankya Gandhi Vadra still to debut in electoral politics, it's just the right time for Rahul to get some "international exposure" in preparation for assuming "greater responsibilities" in life.
And exposure to diplomacy in India's extended neighbourhood, it certainly was. All throughout the two-day visit to Afghanistan, Rahul Gandhi was right there next to PM Manmohan Singh and external affairs minister Natwar Singh during all official engagements.
Clad in natty beige and grey suits, Rahul Gandhi participated in all delegation-level meetings. "He was quiet but very attentive, soaking in the atmosphere," said an official.
Rahul Gandhi, who entered the portals of Parliament for the first time just last year from Amethi, himself ducked inquisitive mediapersons right through the trip, with the ever-ready SPG poised to yank him away if the threat loomed large.
