"I think about all those things I did throughout the years that I'm not proud of today," stated Major Neil Franklin, a retired Police Officer, and Executive Director of Law Enforcement Against Drug Prohibition (LEAP). Franklin got a little choked up when reflecting on the negative results fighting the Drug War had on communities of color. Franklin calls for and end to the war on drugs.

Franklin was a panelist at an event at the historic riverside church in Harlem, put on by the Riverside Church Prison Ministry and The Campaign to End The New Jim Crow. The event featured keynote speaker, Michelle Alexander, author of The New Jim Crow, Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness.

  • Refreshing to hear a cop acknowledge the difference between police officer and peace officer. Kudos to the increasingly rare, almost extinct, 'good apple'.

  • Drug addiction is a social and medical problem. It should be treated as such. Not as a criminal problem. End the war on drugs.

  • FROM POLICE OFFICER TO PEACE OFFICER

  • As a white woman who marched in Civil Rights I am embarrassed to admit how naive I have been. I was never bigot, wasn't raised that way in the Army. But as I researched the history of this travesty called a drug war I realize it is nothing more than racism revamped. I would love to see this gentleman in person. So many young lives wasted, destroyed. Police should be Peace Officers, protecting us from child abusers, rapists, real criminals. End this insanity. We need to demand it !

  • this brotha knows how filthy and disgusting these devils are being in law enforcement. He sees the wicked shit that these cops do and the systems is meant to keep so called hispanics in prison

  • @1h34rtmus1c and so that is supposed to give him/them a pass... gtfoh.. don't cry now after the countless lives he has ruin.. save me to sob story... fuck'em all

  • Neil, your organization needs direction; it currently has none. You, as a speaker, are also in need of a director - a swagger couch if you will. LEAP was inaccurate in allowing you to speak on its behalf before you were groomed for the role. LEAP, at this point, appears to be a group of unguided members uttering half comments. (With the exception of LEAP associate Eric Sterling – a true firebrand.)

  • Its good to see at least one good black cop. You wont get arrested for carrying a tea bag in your pocket but you will get arrested for cannibus. Why? Because people selling to make money tax free. If people started selling tea bags that too will become illegal. And sure they will legalize cannibus only so they can deem it sales taxable. Fuck the Law Makers.

  • He actually choked up remembering the time he punched an bodyslammed a baby for reaching into it's diaper and pulled out an item, later discovered to be a pacifier.

  • Ron Paul for president 2012. He will end the war on drugs!

  • Good video. This guy, Neil Franklin, is a great dude. I've met him and he stands for what is good in the community. He's one of the few in northern Manhattan that I respect. Rangel can suck it.

  • @ZeroRed78 I guess I have been following the political scene from a little too close lately. All I see is corruption and unethical behavior. I need a vacation, going crazy with these negative energies emanating from the people we are supposed to trust. I am 95% not talking about the Police right now, since they are obligated to do what Congress says.
