Selective Mutism Poem

this is a poem my friend made i put it up for him

In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders selective mutism is described as a rare psychological disorder. People who have selective mutism are capable of speaking but fail to do so in certain social situations that they find uncomfortable. Selective mutism is sometimes confused for autism but selectively mute people can talk and autistic people have limited language.

If you look on Google how common Selective Mutism is, it will say less than 1%. I quoted that, too. By the way, in case you were wondering, I am the creator of the video. I just have a separate account for myself. And yes, he is very smart. He recently got picked out in his school for the best grades all year. He makes straight A's.

I hate to quote wikipedia, but on a page like autism, mistakes wouldn't last more than a day. It says that the spectrum is about 6 in 1000. SM is about 7 in 1000 according to the latest study - you see this figure everywhere. That's about 1 in 150. Not that they aren't both underestimated. And I have heard that some autistic people are fine with language. Maybe that was wrong.

I can't express how wrong it is for them to do that to him. I bet he's really smart. (He wrote this poem!)

@Elemarth The autism spectrum is not rare at all. It affects 1 in every 150 children. Selective mutism affects less than 1% seen in mental health. Autistic people virtually do not have a large vocabulary due to not understanding it quite clearly. If you do research on autism, you will see they have problems with language and social skills. My friend is 13 and they put him in a special ed class because they think he is mentally challenged.

I disagree: SM is no more rare than the entire autism SPECTRUM. And also, autistic people can be fine with language but not social skills.

It's a great poem except a few confusing lines. Please never put white words on a white picture.

How old is your friend? He shouldn't be in a special ed classroom if he is. He shouldn't fail for not speaking. It's not his fault. Good luck and hugs to him.
