Discover -- to make known or visible; scientifically, to observe and reveal; in the archaic sense, to disclose, or to bring to light something forgotten or hidden. All of this is what Elise Wagner's painting is about, emerging awareness -- of the infinitesimal and the vast, the microscopically close and the galactically far away. By using the many symbols found in astronomy, physics and alchemy, Wagner's work invokes the seemingly illogical and arbitrary order inherent in an uncertain world. This talk will examine how, amidst the blinding speed and pixilization of our contemporary visual culture, Wagner's paintings compel us -- the beholder -- to stop and pay attention, and how they speak to the unfolding of time and the passing of memory.
