Own the entire build on DVD! http://nwgun.com/AR-MPR-DVD

Please join me on http://ultimatereloader.com as I walk through a complete AR-15 adventure starting with a from-scratch AR-15 build. In this video, we'll walk through the process of installing a free-float hand guard. The handguard we're using here is a Midwest Industries 12" free float quad rail unit. In the next video, we'll assemble the bolt carrier group, and check headspace.

  • wow... maybe by december 2011 this might get done.

  • @askaryambus : It takes a while when you have to plan the video sequences, do a practice assembly, disassemble, light each shot, shoot each clip, work with off-camera sound, sync up sound and video in post production, color grade, apply filters etc. I did a practice assembly of the upper, and it only took two hours (learning for the first time). By contrast, each video takes a total of about 3 hours to put together. Hoping to get the rest of the assembly posted in the next month. Hope you enjoy!

  • Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is this build from a specific kit from Midwest Industries, or are you just buying the parts seperately ?

  • Great videos! Could you tell me what kind of spaner wrench you used?

  • Awesome videos Mr. Gavin

  • @gavintoobe The practice session really shows when I watch this video! Well made, no stumbling over words, easy to see all parts. Ive seen plenty of videos made with good intentions but no planning, plenty of parts hidden in shadows, people learning by doing(while they made the video) and so on. Great stuff! Keep up the good work!

  • @goodnightChesty1775 Hi, ive just fitted one on my M16A2 , you can hardly notice the difference in weight and it actually makes the rifle feel more robust instead of the old round plastic handguards:)

  • gavin..... if i install a free float handguard will it be on there solid with no play or woble???

  • great video.

  • i love your work...you take so much care into your mods. i need someone like you to work on my ar. i've seen some "gunsmiths" who bang or take very little care in the installations of a customers parts, it's scary.

  • Gavin,

Couple of questions. Why did you go 1 piece as opposes to two piece for the rail.

you thoughts in mounting optics or anything "sensative" on the handguard. The old school was that you wanted everything mounted to the upper in that in theory a handguard can still move.

  • im not bitching about weight..but that looks like its pretty heavy with the barrel and that handguard. but still sexy
