Someone pressing a cut-out into the ground could have different depths, yet so would an animal walking in the wild (changes in soil, changes in speed) . If anything, prints that belonged to a hoaxer would be more similar each time due to a conscious effort to make the depths look the same, while an animal (obviously) would not. More importantly, the shape of the prints varied, which does suggest authenticity.
Each footprint being different depths would indeed indicate hoaxing instead of no hoaxing as she stated. Duh. An animal would weigh the same each step but someone putting down a fake set would apply different pressures each time. Hoax.
