The ability to exercise this power with impunity is facilitated by the National Security Act of 1947. The thrust of the exposé is the Iran-Contra arms and drug-running operations which flooded the streets of our nation with crack cocaine. The significance of the documentary is probably greater today in 2007 than it was when it was made. We now have a situation in which these same forces have committed the most egregious terrorist attack on US soil and have declared a fraudulent so-called "War on Terror". The ruling regime in the US who have conducted the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, are now banging the war drum against Iran.

I can't decide if Oliver North is the dumbest MF'er in the world or maybe he had an early batch of Jim Jones punch. It's beyond belief that Reagan was untouched, Bush Sr. was unscathed, on down the line including Bush Jr. pardoning Scooter Libby for what obviously was treason, but they wanted to impeach Clinton for getting a few hummers and everybody wanted the Dixie Chicks heads on a pike for being honest thanks to that freaking drug store cowboy!

LOL I know, right? But I believe Clinton was being impeached for the Chinagate scandal (selling technology/secrets to Chinese for favors), not the Lewinski affair, which was a media cover and most likely untrue.

This seems to contradict the reaction to Wikileaks, Julian Assange and Bradley Manning. Those people released this same kind of information and are considered to be traitors and terrorists, etc. Some of the things Manning is being charged with are punishable by death and he still hasn't even received a trail let alone been convicted, yet has been held and tortured in prison for several months. Not to mention the dubious claims against, Assange.

- I still remember the Iran Contra Scandal. We have been fighting the secret government for a very long time. Even Bill Moyers wouldn't make mention of the LBJ conspiracy, not just with JFK, but with the USS Liberty and other Israeli/U.S. joint ventures. This is because Moyers worked closely with LBJ and other politicians and found it hard to admit the stark truth. It's good he remains objective, and this documentary is outstanding.

I believe every negative thing covered in this documentary has gotten worse since 1987. It stayed quite buried through the '90s but Dick Cheney revived the entire philosophy and brought many of the same people back into active service. Since then 'The Enterprise' (which is almost certainly called something else and operated by different people) has grown bigger and more powerful than Secord could have hoped.

The pendulum will swing back but for now, cynicism rules.

As my understanding of the 20th Century as improved, that moment in WW2 when Roosevelt died and Truman took over becomes more and more significant. Henry Wallace was a real progressive and the hawks just couldn't stomach him as a President. So they did whatever it took to put a puppet (Truman) in the Oval Office.

Perhaps if Wallace had been slightly more hawkish, they would have let him take office, and the next 60 years might have been very different.
