Based on the CMOS camera sensors we succeeded in developing an App for android mobiles, working as a real Geiger Counter. This is not a fun app as many other ! We already did several measurements on different devices with several calibrated radiation sources (CO60, CS137 from 10 µS/h to 10 Sv/h at the Helmholtz research center Munich - Buchler Anlage) . Here I show how the app works and how you can enter the adjustment values to show a Gray/h or Sievert/h display. Best results are listed on our homepage (HTC Desire or Samsung Mini for example are very sensitive also Nexus One. In the video we show at the end also a 10Sievert/h radiation image on the camera sensor - very impressive traces like a fog chamber. iPhone App coming soon.

  • It needs to make a clicking sound for that real authentic 5-Mile Island feel :-)

  • @Zardwark the android does, for the iPhone version the click will come in the next versions.

  • The App is now available also for the iPhone (3GS,4,4S), iPad (2) and iPod (2) in the Apple App Store.

  • I would like to see something like this for my Blackberry, would be so cool to see :)

  • @Graham6410 Yes it should work, only we dont have the developer stuff for this and we need support from the manufacturers to handle the different models -- same for the microsoft 7.5 mobil devices or BADA -- all on our nice to have wishlist but hard to fund.

  • @fallphonometer38 good comment and hard to tell. If you handle the app with care it can help. But as I wrote in our start text, never feel save when you have not counts. But if you have nothing to measure then you are even more unsure whats going on. And you cannot sense a radiation otherwise. It can help making decision. Food A with 5 CPM and Food B with 100 CPM - I would take Food A or none of them... thats what it is intended. In case of emergency you can try to minimize radiation.

  • @ChingChongCification I can understand him perfectly, maybe you have a problem with your hearing.

  • Will this be our future? But measuring doesn't necessarily mean controlling the danger. Wouldn't this nice new device give you a false feeling of security? Or might it lead to hysteria in some people measuring all around their daily life?
