As I state at the beginning, I am already aware I have NO rap skills AT ALL. This is a parody, so I don't have to. I did this very spur of the moment (2 days from initial concept to completion) and didn't have time to have one of my many friends with TRUE talent record it. Hopefully the lack of mic skills won't take away from the point. There is no need for anyone to be offended or get bent out of shape, because in the big picture, I am no one. I'm a simple single basketball-mom of 3 kids who just happens to love music and likes to keep discussions moving.
Some of you may be offended by some of the images included here, so allow me to explain where this concept came from. The fact that Mixxie rhymes with Dixie (Dixxie) spawned the idea that it would be funny to do a parody where the ish was "Dixxie". I asked Thesselonious if he could create a similar beat, and of course he could (with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back). As I wrote the lyrics, I focused on the two most common stereotypes about Southerners: the first verse is focusing on the "redneck" or "hillbilly" stereotype, and is pretty straightforward and meant to be fun. The second verse focuses on the "wannabe" stereotype, but goes a little deeper, and could probably use a little more explanation (for clarity). I tried to keep the images in-line with the lyrics, and threw in random images related to anything Dixie (from Dixie cups, to random people named Dixie, to old racist images from Dixie).
Back to that second verse and some of the images. A lot of people won't need any explanation for this, but for those that do, here it is. I wrote the part about keeping a Black dude around cause he's our "ghetto card" because it happens. A lot. These are usually the people who like to throw the N word around cause their Black friend doesn't mind (they will point out that they put an "a" at the end, because apparently that makes it all OK), and they say things like, "But I'm not racist, I have Black friends and listen to rap." The next part about not looking at his sister (I say "his" cause I wrote this intending for a male to record it) is because those same guys will be cool with said Black friend... until they find out their girl or their sister is also cool with him. The "wrong type of doe for those kinds of bucks" had like 3 different meanings when it came to my mind... doe meaning "innocent female" and dough meaning money, then the reference to bucks, also meaning money, but also being an ugly racial term made popular by the movie "Birth of a Nation" (which was referenced in Verse 1 with accompanying images, and which is why I chose this particular image for bucks) that was used to refer to the scary big Black man who was coming after their white women (does). It's more complex than that, but I have limited space and you have Google. The part about mixin it up is pretty obvious, and I thought the image of Flavor Flav and Brigitte Nielsen was just funny. The reference to not taking the Black friend with them to Denny's for pancakes is a reference to the incident in 1994 (I think?) where a Denny's employee refused to seat several Black men who turned out to be government employees. For real Hip-Hop heads I included a picture of Buckshot LeFonque (aka Branford Marsalis) taken from the video (directed by Spike Lee) to his song "Breakfast at Denny's" (produced by DJ Premier), which was inspired by the incident.
I also included a picture of a segregated prom (from 2009, even though schools were integrated in 1971 Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Board of Education).
The last two lines pretty much sum it all up. Stereotypical rap, no matter how popular it is or how much radio play it gets, is just that. A stereotype. A parody of real Hip-Hop, that I just can't take seriously. It's not just what you say, it's how you say it and how much went into creating it that counts. I'm not saying there's no country for fun, superficial, or club-banger songs, but at least make the lyrics clever (there's nothing wrong with writing it down, thinking it through, erasing and re-writing) and have production that doesn't sound like it was done on a Casio in 5 minutes. I'm merely expressing my opinion, so take it or leave it. But at least now you will know what my thought process was when I wrote This is Dixxie.
I have a lot of very talented friends who I'd like to credit for inspiring me to do this, but I didn't include them at this point because I wasn't sure how they would feel about being associated with this and don't drop names without permission.
THIS IS SO FUNNY! Anybody who says "you cant rap" is dumb because 1. Her lyrics are actually pretty good and she's making a point. 2. It's not about the rap skills,it's a comedy,a spoof,a parody, look it up if you don't know what it mean. The same idiot that said that probably ride around with Gucci on repeat all day. Gucci? Flocka! Gucci!!! Flocka! Flocka!
