With folding plugs you either get it or you don't.
Do you get?

  • The slimplug isn't very slim.

  • Compared to what?

  • Hope you do buy one. You should find one on eBay. Just search for Slimplug (no space).

It will be many many months before we know if this inovative desing will get on to the high street. In the meantime, watch Thinplug. Not one of mine but the next best chance of making it through regulatory approval.

  • I agree with nevskixx that it certainly seems Min Kyu Choi's brilliant solution does meet the requirements to comply with the UK regulations. I am sure he would not have developed and prototyped the product this far without ensuring it does. My only question is how is it retro-fitted? Perhaps not in the location of the plug itself but further along the flex? Whatever the case IMO it's genius and if it does get to the market in the UK I'll be waiting to purchase a truck load!

  • I hope that it does make it through standards approval. If only to further challenge the arrogant, anti-inovation stance of the BS 1363 committee and their guardians ASTA.

In their view, the British plug is the best and safest plug and socket in the world and they don't want to see that position changed. Not even in the an age when RCDs and MCB have become the norm. Go Choi go!

  • What's wrong with the newly designed plug by Min Kyu Choi? Why do you think it is not safe?

  • I didn't mention safety. If it can't meet the requirements of BS 1363, that's it. Game over!

  • BS 1363 was introduced in 1947 to end child deaths due to dangerous sockets. It has been a huge success in doing just that. Folding Plug fails to meet at least two of the key safety features required of a plug and it would be illegal to sell it in its present form. SlimPlug has been approved. This is about common sense taking precedence over impractical, but elegant, concepts.

  • Great designs. Thanks.

  • @nevskixx Thanks for your good news! The world has changed. Now, is the turn of marketing personnel to endeavour in competing with other non standard travel adapters. Make everyone no excuse not to buy them!

  • @ScottXe ThinPlug has got specially travel adapters!

  • @defstar001 Thin Plug has only one moving part, the earthpin which is the safest means to making a folding plug. The Folding Plug looks marvellous, but as fatallyflawed has said is it likely to be made safe? This is a key problem.

  • @nevskixx I am pleased to know such innovative and fashionable design of mains plug and will buy it. If such design is extended to travel adapter, it would be good for the whole world. Currently, almost all travel adapters have not been approved to any safety standard. Obviously, no one is brave enough to take up this challenge. I hope I can see it one day and definitely I will buy it.

  • if the choi design goes on shelves, urs ll be pretty screwed

  • It seems like you had a good idea with slimplug. It just seems that Choi's slim plug is better thought out and more practical. I'm sure that they can overcome design faults to get testing approval.

  • Both designs look like "gadets" to me...stick with a standard plug...no moving parts so it's less likely to wear out or break...learn how to pack better and it won't damage your other equipment in transit...
