Here is a video of Sheikh Yusuf Estes opinion regarding the celebration of birthdays/christmas/easter, etc:

The use of computers, satellite, etc, can all be used for beneficial purposes like gaining knowledge, used at work (computers), save lives (computers), etc. The use of technology has nothing to do with celebrations or bid'ah.

Bid'ah is about innovations in the deen of Islam, not innovations in technology and science. Since there is a lot of doubt in this topic, we should not celebrate birthdays as the Prophet (peace be upon him) has encouraged us to avoid what is doubtful.

Bid'ah does not mean worshiping others beside Allah; it is the innovation new things in Islam. Even if you do not think birthdays are bid'ah, there are usually other haram aspects involved - alcohol, music, haram food, etc.

As much as I respect Dr Zakir Naik, I wouldn't celebrate birthdays just because he said so - there are plenty of people with more knowledge that him who say the opposite.

Birthdays have become a ritualistic event which occurs on an annual basis - it brings no benefit whatsoever. As Muslims we don't even celebrate the birthday of the the last prophet, Muhammad (pbuh), the greatest man to ever walk on the face of the earth. What makes our birthday so special? Did any of the prophets celebrate birthdays? Do you see any of the companions celebrate birthdays? Nearly all the scholars say it is bid'ah, yet you overlook the people of knowledge.

  • happy birthday sister :)

  • @UserNotice "Whoever imitates a people is one of them".

I'm pretty sure the Christians and Jews were the one who invent the computer, the satellite, the television etc. Why do you imitates them and use all their inventions? Are you one of them?

Bid'ah in those context most of the time only involves events of worship. If we celebrate birthday by worshipping the moon god, that is bid'ah. Did this lady here worship another god during her birthday?

Celebrating birthdays is bid'ah. Most of the Muslim scholars agree on this matter. Bid'ah leads people astray and then into the Hellfire.

Besides having no place in Islam, it also involves the imitation of Jews, Christians & disbelievers. The prophet (peace be upon him) said "Whoever imitates a people is one of them".

On a lighter note, why celebrate birthdays? You only become another year closer to your death :D
