Until then, The Doors have avoided all of the major rock festivals, only reluctantly agreeing to appear at some of the smaller ones in Toronto and on the West Coast. Ever since the Seattle Pop Festival, they have been wary of all outdoor appearances. Now They are scheduled to appear at what is often referred to as the last of the great festivals.
Prior to their appearence, The Doors, without Morrison, meet the press at a tiny riverside pub in Hammersmith.
The Doors had originally been scheduled to appear directly following Ten Years After, but are delayed until after Emerson, Lake & Palmer.
The Doors are exhausted from their traveling and the previous weeks' court dates in Miami. Arriving at the festival, the weary band finds themselves sandwiched between Ten Years After and Emerson, Lake & Palmer on one side, and the Who and Sly & The Family Stone on the other. Their intense reflective music is out of synch with acts renowned for their fast anf furious pacing. Sometime between one and two in the morning, The Doors take the stage at the chilly outdoor festival and are immediately troubled by the somewhat meager sound reinforcement and lighting systems. They focus primarly on material from their first two albums and keeptheir set much
shorter than the expansive shows thay had been giving in the States that summer. Morrison bypasses the improvised inclusion of other songs they had been incorporating into Light My Fire, but then steps in with some unreleased poetry during The End.
Their show proves to be quiet restrained. Afterward, Jim Morrison is so troubled by their exhausted appearance that he hint to the rest of the band that he hopes it will be their final live performance. Ultimately, The Doors agree to play two more shows in December, in Dallas and New Orleans, and those prove to be their final performance with Jim Morrison.

This portion of festival was also to have featured the very first satellite broadcast of a rock concert, with capacity to cover the event in forty cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. A company called Video Rangers made arrangements for the broadcast to be reflected off the Atlantic satellite in color with high-fidelity sound as a special "Metavision" show to be broadcast in New York at 9:00 pm and California at 6:00 pm. Video Rangers were to have worked alongside Joshua Television (both utilizing the equipment of Management Television Systems, Inc,), which had recently brought screen magnifications to a Who performance in Tanglewood, MA. Joshua White was
designated to direct the "telecast". Scheduled for the monumental broadcast were The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Chicago and Joan Baez.
However by early August, it became apparent that there were insufficient number of venues still available to broadcast the show, and reluctantly Video Rangers had to cancel the event.
The Pye Records Mobile Studio is hired by Columbia to record the entire Isle Of Wight Festival, employing the services of producer Ted Macero and four recording engineers. The Doors' set is also filmed; however, the shadowy lighting results in rather dark film footage.
