In which John finished up what turned out to be Religion Theme Week here in nerdfighteria by discussing the complexity of religious identity and why we must reconcile ourselves to living in a world riddled with ambiguity. (In short, to revisit the theme of Vlogbrothers 2011: The truth resists simplicity.)

Let's continue the conversation in your pants: http://www.yourpants.org

Thanks to nerdfighter and youtuber beastasaurusrexxx for the video of us dancing!

  • Many people call me crazy but honestly, I believe all religions come down to the same, basic, core principal. Love others, love yourself, be kind to all, respect all and to leave this world a better place than when you arrived. And that is how I live my life.

  • OMG I AM SO IN LOVE WITH THE DANCING

  • @prettywoman94 Thousands of years ago those were the kinds of words that would be misinterpreted into adding "unless they don't think like us" at the end.

  • So people makes all kinds of contradictory claims about the supernatural. Non provide any real evidence as to why there claims are correct. These claims are based on faith and as faith is belief without reason, they are there for untestable

What conclusion can we draw from this? Well the way I see it is; until religious beliefs are based on reason and evidence rather then faith one would be silly to believe in them. If one care that about the truth of what one believes that is.

  • yes but what does it mean to be awesome? ;)

  • Hank seems happier to be dancing in cartoon form than John. WHY ARE YOU UNHAPPY, DANCING CARTOON JOHN?!?!?!?

  • John. I never find you boring. Especially when you're talking about religion.

  • @USMC4Jesus Its the whole thing about about raptists having to marry their victims or they are BOTH executed, homosexuals being abominations, women having to be silence in church, and the whole slavery thing being okay in the Bible. Then the quote saying in the New Testament saying ALL rules still have to be followed. But maybe that's just me....

  • Religion just causes trouble.... even in places without religion...its human nature to know killing is wrong etc...religion (and nationalism) are just excuses to do bad things in the name of something that doesn't really exist

  • I respect you, but I must point out that youseems to be missing what it means to be a "Christian". (So do a lot of Christians, so I'm not saying you're not one). A Christian believes that God exists, man is inherently sinful, God came down to earth as a Man, and died, in the process paying the debt we owe to God so that we can be forgiven and not given the punishment we really deserve. That sounds intolerant and all, but if it's true, it's true, and if not, why believe in Christianity at all?

  • Proud Pentecostal here! :)

  • Being a Unitarian Universalist makes these problems much simpler.
