Stalker (1979) - Director's Cut

Video showing the previously unseen director's cut of Andrei Tarkovsky's 1979 cult sci-fi classic, Stalker. "With this version, I wanted to show audiences a side of me which they've never seen before," said the Russian, citing close friend Michael Bay as an influence. "It all started one afternoon when I was hanging out with Michael on the set of Transformers. He said that Stalker was a little too slow and existential and unamerican. Then later we met for coffee and really started exchanging ideas. I invited him into the editing room and he gave me a few pointers. He's incredible―what I can do in twenty minutes, he can do in two seconds." Responding to suggestions that the new version is significantly simplified, Tarkovsky was typically bullish. "Sure, we removed almost all of the dialogue, ignored a few key plot points and toned down the allegorical side, but it moves a lot faster. Look how fast it moves! [laughs] I'm really happy with the final product. It's a lot closer to my original vision." Stalker '09 hits theaters next month.

So Tarkovsky would embrace criticism from a yahoo about a work of such sublime beauty and originality? From someone who has quite likely never put their head above the pulpit and put years of their life, their heart, blood, sweat and tears into this film. Criticism from someone who would best be sat enjoying James cameron and Michael bay dirge. Disapprove all you like, it's your right, I'm just commenting on ignorant criticism, but don't tell me what Tarkovsky would think, like you know him.

You need patience and a stillness of mind to watch this film and you certainly need to not be stupid. There are plenty of films made for stupid people perhaps you would enjoy some of those .

A 'snooze' fest? It's ok that you didn't like it, but try to understand that it was beyond your comprehension, not because it was a poor film. Moreover an intelligence test that you didn't just fail, but that you didn't even realise was even taking place. Not everyone appreciates wonderful cinematography and poetry, not everyone has the facility to allow their imagination to answer the questions that this film poses.

Yeah? Like what? I went out of my way to see STALKER at a Tarkovsky festival in New York several years ago. A real snooze-fest.
