Seeing the Slim Phatty retaining CV (control voltage) inputs I wondered how well line level voltage would work as a control source. The answer:

Pretty Damn Well!

This is a tutorial/demo on how I pulled this off and everything you need to know! The Moog (notes) are controlled via the MPK25 but the filter and pitch modulation is via the CV inputs.

Yes - Line level (analog) signal has voltage. I learned some of these tricks about a year ago - once thinking CV was far out and not so easy to gain control of - wrong.

The modulation of the SF can be controlled with amazing accuracy and synchronization using an application like Ableton. The possibilities are endless - I am still trying to understand where I would like to go with this idea. For now - you have the basic knowledge - please post back ideas and break throughs! Thx.

  • Wow, Nice job! My SP is arriving. but I don´t know if I buy a MPK 25 or a Novation Remote SL25 Mkii. Th mpk looks beauty in your set up, but works fine with SP? I like the Remotes Display, I think with the template editor I could write the SP parameters on it, so it will be visible... ow doubt. Can you help me? Thank you!

  • @Zemael MPK is best. I would have sold you my SF, I hate the unit. The MPK supports NPRN, that is why I had MPKs.

  • Added more support to this video - link is in the description! Thx for viewing!

  • Hello ! Nice video.

If I use filtatron ( for iphone and other iOS devices). And if I generate a LFO with the VCO from filtatron.

Can I put it on " Cv Filter In " ?

  • @seanturcofr That should work. Generally line level voltage is 0-5V (+) and integrates with most CV devices. The exceptions are many, but the moog is pretty normal in the CV requirements. Always proceed wih caution...but there is nto too much risk IMHO. Also - you may need to play around with the connection (invert the voltage, or something like that).

Remember - this video SPECIFICALLY fires out volume modulation - that is the CORE! Use of a filter ONLY add complexity to the volume envelope.

  • @djnotsomuch Thank you again, but why do you hate the SP?

  • Hello.

Can you explain how you create all your clips you launch in this video ?

    thank you very much...

  • @rrrahrrrah I know Expert Sleepers. I don't use CV in anyway that a plugin or sound card will add. I merely documented (here) that many units CV expectations are the same as the voltage in line level signal. I learned this trick a while ago and wanted to pass it along as I am an advocate of post-laptop processing and synthesis. Thx for the comment.

  • Get familiar with the Expert Sleepers plug called Silent Way. It offers way more control, in pretty much the same way as MOTU Volta, but isn't confined to MOTU sound cards alone. Updates are frequent and super stable Buy this and fund these guys. My fav plug hands down.
