Dr Nirmal Patel (Associate Professor of Surgery) performs an operation to remove cholesteatoma (skin in the middle ear) in a patient who has a hole in the ear drum which is getting repeatedly infected. Cholesteatoma is a condition where skin is grows in the middle ear, and can destroy critical structures such as the organ of hearing and balance, the facial nerve (that makes your face move) and in some cases can erode around the lining of the brain and into the brain itself. The treatment is usually surgery, where the skin cyst is removed.
