The Chinese regime launched an international effort last week to promote its image. Videos of accomplished Chinese individuals have taken center stage in New York's Time Square. But as these videos are played overseas, netizens inside China have put forward their own version of China's image. Let's take a look.
This 60-second video will be playing at New York's Time Square 300 times a day, until February 14th. The promotional video began last week, and is part of the Chinese regime's push to establish its global image.
Across the world, another version of the country's image is being portrayed inside China. Senior investigative Journalist Wang Keqing and others called for an online photo submission. They want the public to post pictures they believe best resemble the image of China today.
The response so far has painted a vastly different picture to the official version.
The video in Time Square shows off accomplished Chinese individuals, like basketball player Yao Ming. In contrast, this image posted by Chinese netizens shows a 14-year-old boy restrained after an altercation with city patrol over his mother's street vending booth.
In the promotional video, Chinese supermodels pose for the camera. This online picture shows a mother carrying her child on her back shinning the shoes of a wealthier boy as his mother stands beside him smiling.
Many of the pictures submitted online reflect current social problems. This one shows workers who were not paid, holding up a sign reading: "let bullets and prices fly, but don't let our hard-earned wages fly away." Another one shows villagers kneeling before authorities, begging them to address the problem of severe water pollution.
The Chinese regime's promotional video is part of a number of videos aimed at boosting China's image as prosperous and progressive. Last week the video producers refuted claims it cost more than $6-billion U.S. dollars. So far, the Chinese regime has not revealed how much it spent on the entire project.
