Darpana Model Village Project at Fatehpura

Darpana has now been working as a development communications agency for over two decades with NGOs and government agencies wishing to transmit particular messages to particular audiences. In November 2004, for the first time, Darpana decided to take up a project where it not only initiated development and change, but also implemented it. With initial funding from Canbay, a Pune based IT Company, Darpana for Development took up the village of Fatehpura to try its hand at a comprehensive development project from beginning to end. The idea of working through the arts and then directly through education and self empowerment of and with the people has given Darpana activists an inside view of the processes of change.

Today this very poor and totally backward village in Gandhinagar, stands reinvigorated by these efforts at education, empowerment, formation of groups for savings, cleanliness and nutrition drives and employment training for women. The project is still underway and Darpana activists and the stakeholders in the village are putting together a three-year plan and working with government departments, banks like NABARD, institutions like the Entrepreneurship Institute of India and funders to raise the finances and resources for it.
