John Stowell - Comping

Excerpts from John Stowell's Master Class "Expand Your Comping Concepts" 1/22/09 on www.mikesmasterclasses.com . Video is available for download in PC and iPod/Mac formats. Clip includes Blues and Solar. In this class John demonstrates and explains pianistic devices (isolating/separating notes in the chord, close interval inversions,etc.) and how to apply them to the guitar in the accompaniment role. Also explained and demonstrated are open string voicings, inner voice movement, playing over the bar line, developing a rhythmic vocabulary as it applies to comping. The devices/techniques are played in the context of simple tunes to demonstrate real world applications.

I have had a chance to meet Mr. Stowell and I have to tell you from my experience he is not remotely smug. He was very warm and gracious. When the man plays his expressions are in the moment. I would ask you not to confuse that with being smug.

As a side note, the guy is a monster player! I can't believe some of the voicings he can grab.

I have played some duets with him at the NAMM show, even in a noisy environment, it was a very enjoyable experience. He is a bad ass and a true original. But not well known outside of the small jazz guitar circles
