This Lancaster, SC native has lived in the Charlotte, NC area now for years and is an absolute icon on the Carolina Beach Music scene. Maurice started with a group called the Royal Charms that was subsequently renamed The Gladiolas and then the Excellos and finally the Zodiacs with Maurice in the lead. His songwriting was the first to gain national attention with "Little Darlin" recorded by The Diamonds reaching #2 on the pop charts in 1957. But in 1960 his own group made a bit of recording history with "Stay", the shortest song at 1:32 to ever reach #1 and to this day that record stands.
"Stay" was an anthem for Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs and for Carolina Beach Music in general.

  • Okay...I've been looking everywhere for a stereo version of this song and you have it. Now I want to pay you for a higher quality copy. This recording sounds like it came from the original tape. Not even the studios seem to have released this. I'd love to see it get remastered and tuned because the pitch is slightly off in both the left and right channels for some reason. But I love it! :)

  • @thecwproject The man I got this cut from has since passed away so I don't know how to respond to you about this except to say I was just like you always looking for a better version of it than that which had been commercially released. I'd be happy to e-mail you a copy of it if you can get it remastered and send it back to me. Just contact me at nocaro@aol.com.

  • Hello great song I met Maurice in Myrtle Beach, SC at show at Holiaday Inn he came to my table and shook my hand great guy!

  • This does sound different than I remember, too. I don't know if it sounds faster, because I might have been influenced by other comments, but I do hear more nuance than I'm used to. Every voice and instrument stands out, rather than everything blending into one whole, if that makes any sense.

As always, Nocaro, thanks for sharing so much great music.

  • Never heard this...sounds even faster than the original...lots of cool stuff going on in the background...fab post...keep these mixes coming...thanks

  • WOW, LUFFED IT THEN, LUF IT NOW,

AND YES ITS A SHORT SONG, WELL... I WILL PLAY IT TWICE.

  • Very interesting. I never realized it was SOOO short...

The song had more to give. I wonder why they chose to release this edit?

  • Shortest #1 song ev er according to Billboard.
