SR 520 Floating Bridge - Simulated failure by earthquake

This simulation highlights what might happen in the event of a complete and catastrophic failure of the west approach to the SR 520 Floating Bridge. An earthquake could render the bridges unusable.

I'm assuming the west approach is not the floating part of the bridge. What about building cross braces on the columns? Or make the approach float as well. If the entire thing is floating then only the points where the bridge connects to the land would be at risk.

boats have to be able to pass the bridge on a regular basis.

What I was suggesting would be bracing on each set of columns, not bracing between them. I'm sure that most boat, especially larger ones, go through the west high-rise. We have one bridge here that is a hybrid of a suspension bridge with the tower based on land and everything over the water is floating. You can look up Nordhordaland Bridge.. there is a small article in Wiki and some photos on Google.
