An emotionally unstable man convinces a well-to-do family that he is the famous director Mohsen Makhmalbaf. Director Kiarostami blends reenactments of the events that have unfolded, interviews with the people involved, and actual footage from the trial of the would-be Makhmalbaf to create a compelling story of desperation and redemption.

  • is this a movie or a documentary? are the characters real?

  • @bettyjoon3 It is a bit of both. The movie is based on real events. Some scenes are recreations of actual events using the real people involved portraying themselves. Some scenes, such as the courtroom scenes, were filmed as they happened in real life (Kiarostami got permission to film in the courtroom). The scene posted here is the actual first meeting between the director Kiarostami and the real-life con-man while he is in custody.
