i know this is probably random to you since you posted this a year ago..and most of what you said makes since..but most of marching band or pretty much any sort of competiton band is too impress the crowd and the judges..and you cant do that by playing the simplest beat you know..our is pretty intricate but i dontr even play the drums and i can play it pretty easy...i actually had to teach our freshman how to play it

not because we show off our skills. If you want to do that, find a clinic or comp somewhere. This is about the band, and the music, not about the line or the section leader. I feel as though anywhere a drum is heard solo, the drummer has to make it into this big, "Drumline"-esque production because he's "The drummer", the "basass" of the group. Every instrument has a purpose that it has to stick to, as well as a strength. Realize that.

I notice this more and more, highschools and colleges making these huge intricate cadences, with stuff that's solo-worthy. I don't understand it, the purpose of the cadence is to give the played song a rest so it doesn't sound looped and to keep the beat, it's not "percussion shine time", you can have fun with it, but don't take it too far, it's gotta be march-able Our cadence this year is based off of a four dotted eighth-note pattern on the snares. And it's gonna sound GOOD,

A few weeks ago, I was in a Memorial Day Parade for Cavandish, VT. We basically marched through a Ghost Town. Only two or maybe three (three is pushing it) people watched our band play. It was aweful.
