Going over the port switch at Wilma just into Washington State from Idaho our trip continues west to Riparia. Along the way from here the Snake River will parallel us for the entire trip. After Wilma and passing the Bennett Lumber Mill we leave civilization and head out into the Snake river canyon. There are only sporadic small towns from here with just a handful of homes visible for the rest of the trip to Riparia.
There are some crossings in this video where the rail line intersects, most include cattle guards to prevent cattle from wandering onto the rail line.
We round a curve and the Lower Granite Dam comes into view. Unfortunately due to the cut the railroad ROW is we cant see the spillway from a westbound move. This was the last dam built in a series of dams on the Snake River system.
Passing MP 12 we see a lone fisherman's boat anchored in the river...were they sleeping? Even on the return trip a few hours later, no one was in the boat!
Special thanks to Jim Morefield for providing some historical and technical data printed here.
Per NARCOA rules, our cars are not allowed to activate the crossings. The common understanding is that "If cars don't stop for flashing lights for the trains (and they sometime crash into the side of the moving train) why would they stop for a tiny speeder?" So we take the smart, safe choice and make an individual crossing responsibility of the speeder operator, and NOT the responsibility of the automobile drivers.
