The single most important motorway in the Netherlands: A4 from Leiden to Amsterdam. The A4 connects the three largest cities in the Netherlands and was the first 10-lane motorway in the country. It will be widened to 14 lanes by 2012.

Recorded Sunday February 13th, 2011

  • No trucks :(

  • @a7bf6 There aren't many trucks on the road on Sunday (which makes it better for filming), but there is no truck ban on Sundays in the Netherlands like in Germany or France.

  • It seems to me like the Netherlands has quite a car culture, perhaps moreso than most European countries. Getting into ratios of cars per person or household, or at least how much cars are used by owners, do the Dutch drive more than other Europeans?

  • @CptSchmidt The Dutch car usage (car share of total passenger kms) is slightly above the EU average with 86.5%. It's a bit of an North American myth that European car usage is much lower than in the U.S. or Canada. It's only slightly lower, mostly due to urban public transport and cycling facilities being better.

  • which car you have?

  • @Franks4488 Speed limit on highways is from 80 (test to lower the number of traffic jams), to 100-120 (normal) and as another test some roads have a speed limit of 130 km/h.

  • 5:00 - last driving day of old car...

  • Still pretty impressive to drive in europe and see how their infrastructures laws are top notch ! ... What is the speed limit in netherlands ?

Also, I'm happy to see that peoples are passing by the left compared to usa where they are passing you both sides everywhere everytimes Lol

    Nice video thumbs up ^^

  • Very nice video, Chris.

  • @wimpie25 Hm, that is very interesting to know. Thanks for the detailed replies - to you and Chris both.

  • @CptSchmidt

The Benelux overal has quite an impressive car culture. Belgium for example has 7 million registered vehicles on the road to a near 11 million population. When we take the amount of drivers licences in account, there are more cars than people to drive them. The average is about 0.7 people per motorvehicle (higher than the Dutch). Belgians use there cars averagely 6.4 days a week (also higher than the Dutch.

Looking to the history it is not strange though since GM Europe was in B.

Well, it has been upgraded. The first part Leiden - Burgerveen has been opened in 1960 with 2x2 lanes, the second part Burgerveen - Amsterdam opened in 1937, also 2x2 lanes...

  • I like the lane markings (arrows) on your auxillary lanes. They are very helpful to drivers who may not have seen or missed the gantry signs. I drove in the Netherlands during my visit there last month. Greetings :)

  • Nice, looks awesome, clearly a newer freeway. Great stuff!
