On vacation in Niger we went to see the last remaining wild herd of giraffes in West Africa. The location of the conservation center was a little south of Niamey off the highway a bit. Since it was the rainy season the giraffes hadn't strayed far to search for food so we were able to walk a few K to find them. We approached a herd of about 25 giraffes and walked around with them for a while, watching them eat and recline in the shade. Just seeing their long necks and regal heads above the tree tops was amazing. What makes these giraffes wild is that they don't live in a protected national park area, but just in the savannah land, right alongside small villages. Because they were used to seeing non-threatening humans we were able to get quite close to them, maybe about 30 feet. It was incredible.
