@Soulquarium I agree with you completely. I attended Mariners from 1997-2006. IT is church for rich people, run like a business. There are some good things there, but it is way too seeker friendly/Willow-Creek model, and very shallow in a lot of areas, especially Kenton's teaching. It's not that its aberrant, its just not there at all most weekends. Topical sermons with scripture as an afterthought, and no in-depth meat. Pax!
I am truly happy that you have found a church that you have loved and connected with. My wife and I found it to be amixed bag. I thought Kenton was a very good preacher, and as I said I thought his messages were biblically sound. I did think it was, "too much stuff. There is a definte feel for image, and I didn't find the people to be especially welcoming.Kenton even says, "We are here to make you feel comfortable". However being comfortable can sometimes cause people to become complacent.
Soulquarium, I have been attending Mariners for 2 years now and at first thought like you about it. But thank God I dove in a found it is not like that. It is a very giving church and many great things happen there. That is my home church. I was baptized there and worship with all my heart every weekend. It's a church. It is about God and not the cars people drive.
No offense, but you sound very egotistical/pompous in your response to my message. Mariner's was all about, "making you feel comfortable"(i.e. the trams, the bookstore, the fancy cafe) however, the Bible clearly teaches that we shouldn't be comfortable in our walk as Christians, lest we lose our way, and his intended message for mankind. I do not have any animosity towards rich people...but I just wish the Shady Canyon/Newport Coast people would just act more real.
God loves those people as much as he loves those who drive more humble cars or others who have no car at all. The senior pastor, Kenton Beshore regularly urges the people at Mariners to give sacrificially of their time and money, Mariners' Lighthouse Ministries does just that. The Bible talks about how difficult it is for a man who has money to inherit the kingdom of heaven... among other things, Mariners is doing a fabulous job at helping rich people find and serve God.
My wife and I use to attend Mariner's. It is biblically sound, but so many of the people their don't have a clue what church is all about. Its a "rich person's church". Every car in the parking lot is a Porsche or Mercedes, and I can't help think that's why alot of people go their...the cool stuff. I've grown up in Newport my whole life, but that whole mentality is so foregin to me.
