This was 1993, Lance Armstrong's first full year as a professional with the Motorola Cycling Team. This was the first of three legs of the Thrift Drug Triple Crown series. The Thrift Drug Classic held in Pittsburg.

Thrift Drug Triple Crown of Cycling consisted of three races: the Thrift Drug Classic in Pittsburgh, the K-Mart West Virginia Classic, and the CoreStates USPRO national championship in Philadelphia. Thrift Drug said it would award $1 million to a rider winning all three races, a feat previously un-achieved.
