Cookie Cockatoo Turns 77 at Brookfield Zoo

Go to htttp://www.CZS.org/Cookie77 for full story...Since late September 2009, Cookie, a Major Mitchell's cockatoo at Brookfield Zoo, has been off exhibit in Perching Bird House enjoying his golden years and spending quality time with his keepers. But on Saturday, June 26, at 10:30 a.m., he made a public appearance for a very special occasion: his 77th birthday celebration, sponsored by American Airlines.

Guests joined zoo staff just outside the building's entrance to greet Cookie and sing a rousing chorus of "Happy Birthday" as he was presented with one of his favorite treats: a birthday cake the size of a muffin. The muffin was filled with some of Cookie's favorite foods, such as carrots, apples, bananas, raisins, and eggs (including the shells for calcium).

Cookie permanently resides in the keepers' office at Perching Bird House, which allows him to retire in a familiar and comfortable off-exhibit setting.

The first time I saw Cookie, he wolf-whistled at me (twice) and then spent the next several minutes flirting with me while preening his feathers, which he was clearly anxious that I should admire. All dirty old men should be so cute. Long may he live.

Sweet Cookie is the reason I now own 2 cockatoos....a Moluccan , age approx 50, and an Umbrella, age 14. They are a lot of work but a lot of joy as well.

@114156pg13 normal years. Some bird species, like Cookie's, can live up to 80 or 90 years. Unlike dogs, who for every year it ages 7 human years, birds go by just normal years :) Hope this helps!
