ECARS began operation in 1968 as an Amateur Radio public service net for mobile operators on 7.255 MHz. It is very rare that a QRP (low power) station has difficulty checking into traffic or training nets since there are always others on frequency to help relay you into the net control station operator. In this video, I was using a Yaesu 817ND running 5 watts to check into the ECARS Net Control Station in East Canton, Ohio from Huntsville, AL. The radio was inside my Sonoma pickup. The antenna used was a 40 meter Workman antenna on the banks of the Tennessee River in Huntsville, AL at what is known as Ditto Landing.

  • Thanks for your comment. Yes, I still use the 817ND. A great little QRP rig. 73 from ALABAMA.

  • Will,

Do you have any preference between the FT-817ND and the IC-703?

Interested in opinions of pros and cons.

    Video was superb- Thanks!

  • The Icom 703 Plus and the Yaesu 817ND are two great radios. They are however, two different beasts. The 817 is compact, but no internal antenna tuner and only 5 watts max—a true QRP radio. The 703 is capable of 10 watts and has the build-in tuner. I wouldnt give up either one. ++But++ if I had to choose between one or the other, I would choose with the 703 since its the best of both.

  • Thanks for your comment. I think most of us that enjoy QRP find it much more satisfying when you're able to make a low-power contact while others are using a kilowatt of power. The highest power I ever run is 100 watts. Nothing more. But, I do really enjoy QRP-- and with code, you really need very little power anyway.

  • Another great video there :)

I have the 817 and the z100 ultra fantastic combination.

    Keep the vids coming

  • Thanks Marky. I agree. The 817 and z100 are pefect mates. Not sure if you notice the black duct tape that I use to keep the two together. 73 from Huntsville.
