______

Single SM57 aimed toward center of cab, two feet back to capture full x-patterned cab sound.

Both amps were in 100 watt mode, OD1, with all the EQ controls at noon, gain at around 2:00, volume at 9:00, and clean boosted with a Maxon OD-9 (drive-off, level-1:00, tone-11:00). Guitar used was a Gibson Les Paul Custom with a seymour duncan SH5 custom in the bridge.

Ideally, I would not run the Nitro's bass that high, but kept everything at noon for the sake of comparison.

Setups compared:
Nitro - Gov/MoW
QR - Gov/MoW
Nitro - Gov/SB25
QR - Gov/SB25

Keep in mind that these amps do not have entirely stock tubes in them. I've selected both power and pre-amp tubes to get them to my ideal sound. The power tubes are also rated differently to help balance out each amps attributes. Because of this, their differences aren't as apparent as they would be stock b/c they are somewhat blended now.

Here are the tube setups:
Splawn Quickrod:
SED Winged C EL34s (40 mA tube rating)
v1&2 - stock jj ecc83s
v3&4 - shuguang 9th gens (100-105 range)

Splawn Nitro
Tung-Sol EL34Bs (53 mA tube rating)
v1&2 - stock jj ecc83s
v3&4 - shuguang 9th gens (105-110 range)

both amps biased to around 65%.

  • 53mA and it doesnt blow? I think the amp eats tube with bias settings like that.

  • 53 is referring to the tube rating, not the amp bias. the amp was biased to around 32.5 mA or around 65% given a 500 plate voltage.

  • oh my god...

where abouts in australia do they stock splawns?

    ive always loved them,

but now thanks to this video,

my pockets are going to be hurting for a long time.

    hah

  • i don't believe there are any dealers in australia. closest thing would be custom audio boutique in new zealand.

  • Dude, The Stereo Version you offer, is KICK ASS!

    WAYYYYY brutal :)

  • his gain is at 2 oclock, like on a clock, so it would be at about 8, and the volume is at 9 oclock, which is like 3 if you give the knob a 1-10 amount.

  • @Lucario1211 Of corse, as long as the PRS custom 24 has hot pickups it should be fine which most of them do

  • Your vid is a favorite on Jamaica

  • Your vid is popular on Central African Republic

  • You can get the QR and Nitro almost sounding identical.

  • I wanted a Quick Rod... but now I want a Nitro. That's another $100 I need... Oh well. Do you think I could get tones like this with a PRS Custom 24?

  • THe higher wattage speakers all sound smoother and warmer. The 25 watters make the tone ratty and spitty, harsh to me.

  • I really like both the Quick Rod has more definition and a little more articulation but the Nitro much more saturation and sustain. Can the Nitro sound like the Quick Rod if the gain was backed off or is it just a different sound all together?

  • personally i'd keep the gain at around 11 o'clock and play harder. That is why you buy a very good hand wired amp, to pick up what your hands are saying better. not hide behind gain. tight playing though. GET HEAVY GAUGE STRINGS, Turn your gain DOWN AND PLAY HARD!!
