"Als Luise" is an emotional depiction of a scene in which Luise has discovered that her lover has cheated on her and she burns all the letters he has ever written to her, condemning them to the flames from which they came. "You owe your existence to the flames; now I give you back to the flames along with all the adoring songs, because alas, he did not sing only to me..."
