The guy on the left is playing a Fender bass VI, a six string bass which although superficially looking like a normal guitar had a longer scale neck (27" I think) & heavier guage strings.
These guys just never made it. This song is great and most likely the only one they achieved success with. There have been loads of bands that have had great songs but never made it to an album.

Lead singer is the bassist. He's playing a Fender 6 strings bass/ guitar, same as John Lennon used on Let It Be sessions!
