South Brisbane Storms Chasers Andy Barber and Cam Hines chase there first tropical system of their chase careers as Severe Tropical Cyclone Yasi (Category 5) zero's in on the Northern Queensland Coast in Australia. Andy and Cam positioned themselves to the south of Townsville within the boundary of 'Destructive winds' approx. 350kms south of the 'Very Destructive Winds' eyewall of the system. Both chasers experienced sustained winds of 140kph gusting to over 170kph at times. The wild winds caused considerable damage to foliage and also to personal property. Multiple power flashes were also experienced for hours as powerlines howled in the wind and made regular contact.

We also witnessed a powerful storm surge making its way into the marina at Bowen.
