In this video I run the FS-48 diesel conversion I did in 2006. I rebuilt it last year to replace a damaged liner and ring (unrelated to the diesel conversion). I also added the crankcase recirculation system OS uses in the new Alpha Series. Once the engine is warmed up I can switch to a fuel mix with no ether. 12% oil, 87% kerosene, and 1% DII. I did not measure RPM this time, but it has run at 10,800 RPM on the etherless fuel while turning a Graupner 12x6. Fuel consumption is on the order of 12oz (355mL) per hour at wide open throttle in flight. The compression setting is substantially higher without ether, but the engine appears to be doing well. In the past I had run the engine with 20% castor oil in this fuel. The 12% synthetic oil is an experiment at this time. Please note model diesel engines are design to run on model diesel fuel containing ether, kerosene, oil and a few other additives. It is best purchased ready to use. Fuel without ether is an experiment at this time.

  • What is that thing you're turning at the top of the glow plug area? I'm new to diesels

  • @horizonflyer9 That's a compression ratio adjustment I made for this engine. Model diesel engines typical have adjustable compression ratio.

  • do they make a diesel engine for cars or boats , can you run normal truck diesel in one of these engines or does it have to be the model diesel???? sorry for all the questions but after i seen all the plane engines running diesel im intrested in what all diesel rc engines have to offer

  • @m0dthunder Model diesel engines use model diesel fuel. They will not run on pump diesel.

  • can you just use regular nitro fuel? say 15% nitro and 18% lubricant

  • @balls2yourface The OS FS-48 engine is made for glow fuel (methanol, nitromethane, and lubricant) for use with a glow plug. I have converted this engine to run as a diesel. Model diesel engine fuel is typically ether, kerosene and lubricant, no glow plug is required, heat of compression ignites the air/fuel mix. Ether is there to assist starting and reduce running compression.

  • I would like to know, I can send the mechanical design of the conversion, or if you sell the piece ready.

  • The head is milled to increase compression ratio. There are several parts that need to be modified for things to fit afterwards, intake manifold, pushrods, and pushrods covers. The stock rod is adequate.

  • What mods were done. Was the Con-ron upgraded?

  • Great video Greg ;-)

I'll have to send you my ASP FS52 for a conversion one of these days.

    Take care!
