The Toledo Zoos Hippoquarium, an underwater viewing exhibit for hippopotami, is the first of this kind in the world

Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibious) is the second largest land animal, after the elephant, and the heaviest extant artiodactyl.

Despite looking like pigs, their closest living relatives are cetaceans (whales, porpoises, etc.,). They can run much faster than humans around 19 mph.

The zoo became well known around the zoological world as a place to view hippos in a natural setting. The Hippoquarium has been rated by USA Today as one of the nation's ten best animal exhibits, and was featured in National Geographic.

West Indian manatees are one of the most endangered species in the world. Although they look like walruses, manatees are related to elephants and hyraxes.

The Columbus Zoos Manatee Coast is one of only 3 located outside of Florida to house West Indian manatees. It is a 190,000-gallon indoor habitat that supports endangered West Indian manatees.

Its Discovery Reef is a 10,000-gallon saltwater aquarium housing sting rays, sharks, sea turtles and many other species of fish and a large live coral exhibit.

The West Indian Manatee (Trichechus manatus) is the largest surviving member of the aquatic mammal order Sirenia, which also includes the Dugong and the extinct Steller's Sea Cow. They may have prehensile lips that work like hands (as the elephant does).

They are huge. The largest individuals can weigh up to 3,300 lb and measure up to 15 ft long. Females are larger. The Manatee's color is gray, brown, or blue like the sky and the water it lives in. They can be called sea cows and are thought to be what people once thought were mermaids. They are warm blooded mammals that can live up to 70 years old. They communicate with voices that sound like clicks and chirps.

  • @jforhsee1 Hear it? It practically blew my speakers out! These are the kind of people that go out in public and ruin it for everybody else!!

  • Um....I would NEVER spend a day at the zoo, or ANYWHERE with these people (who aren't shown thankfully in this video). They are loud and obnoxious.

  • Did u hear the retard say ohhh that's a hippopotamus at the beginning

  • cool i like hippos

  • I remember this from 1989 ,and the elephants were swimming too. Without the hippo ,and making lots of noise while swimming.

  • 5 stars i love hippos

  • Wow, Hippos are BIG, but while they look clumsy on land, they're more graceful underwater! 5* for ya IrenaScott and thankin' ya for another AWESOME share!
