From 1992 through 1994 a small town drumline from Warsaw, Indiana showed the nation what intensity means. The ensemble won the BOA Grand National Marching Percussion Festival in Indianapolis three years in a row. This is the 1993 show featuring music from Aaron Copland (Appalachian Spring and Rodeo - Hoedown). The group went on that same season to win the Morehead State University and the Spartan Marching percussion festivals.

Members included Jeremy Miller, Pete Harter, Patrick Woods, Katy Malloy, Lane Armey, Brian Lindquist, Jeff Handel, Chris Robinson, Jodi Fulkerson, Brad Gold, Jason Couch, Sarah Kirkpatrick, Matt Withrow, Mandy Armey, Debbie Hoy, Leif Hall, Chris DeWilde, Mark Krenz, Valerie Gold, Amy Crowninshield, Ben Handel and Matt Tusing. Our instructor was Mickey Ratliff, who just started his first year at Warsaw. This group had a level of intensity and professionalism in their practice and performance coupled with talent and that drove their continued success.

Over half of the members in 1993 where juniors and seniors and probably half were in Drum and Bugle Corps around that time (Bluecoats and Glassmen mostly). Several went on to either be music educators or performers such as Jeff Handel, who is now the drummer for the Dallas Brass. Among others who went on to great success was Matt Tusing, who became deputy Secretary of State for Indiana.

That drummer shown in between the show and the awards ceremony is Ed Shaughnessy, famous drummer for the Tonight Show, who gave a special performance at the festival and gave out awards too. Nice guy.

  • i am so sorry...there is a difference between a hater and someone with an educated opinion...i mean this in a humble and mature way...but my high school is way better and it is not even in the top 10 drumlines in California in that year 1993... i graduated from Los Altos High School at the end of a dominating era.( Los Altos used to be the best in California or Independence or Poway)

but this playing and execution would be ranked like 59 in California...

Nothern Ca drumlines were the stuff...

  • @jackhammer10101 Do you have a video to demonstrate this? Memory often paints a rosy picture. Honestly, there were some of us that looking back at this and realized how many wrong notes we played, but you can't argue that we won 3 years in a row against at least some of the best in the midwest. I think its common knowledge though in the midwest that California has a lot of great bands, drumlines and guards, but few can afford to make the trip. Texas is the same way.

  • The 1994 show was so much better! I've been looking to get my hands on the WCHS percussion and band shows from '94, so I'd love to know how you managed to get this one.

  • @jackhammer10101 Which line were you in back in the Day? Were you in Clovis West? Was that while Jeff Lee was teaching there?
