For those who don't know, in parts of Mexico (Tamaulipas and Veracruz that I know of) there is a tradition of building an effigy of an old man, symbolizing the old year, and then burning it at midnight to burn away the old year and give place to the new one. In parts of Veracruz, this tradition is acompanied by the singing of the conga del viejo, performed in this video.
