Of the eight million pets that enter animal shelters and rescue groups every year, approximately three million of these healthy and treatable pets are euthanized due to a lack of adoption. While there has been steady progress on the issue, the continued euthanasia of our best friends and family members is a national tragedy.

Adopting a pet is a life-changing and enriching experience. It not only saves an animal's life, but adopted pets also provide unconditional love, affection and attention. Research has even shown that owning a pet has many positive psychological and physical health benefits.

Presently, most people do not obtain their pets from shelters, but rather from pet stores, the Internet, friends, breeders or other sources. In an effort to change this trend, The Shelter Pet Project is designed to encourage pet lovers throughout the country to make shelters and rescue groups the first place they turn to when acquiring companion animals. Campaign ads use humor to give shelter pets a voice and break down negative stereotypes; contrary to popular beliefs, animals most frequently find themselves in shelters due to owner-related issues.

At the http://www.theshelterpetproject.org users will find information about how to adopt from a shelter, as well as a fun matching tool designed to help potential pet owners identify traits to look for in an animal. Based on results, it will even supply a list of suitable pets avilable in local shelters. Other fun and interactive tools are also available, all in an effort to significantly increase the rate of pet adoption.

  • I'd take the cat. Of all the moves I've done in the last 15 years (5), my cats have gone with me.

  • thank you AD Council!! Hopefully this opens peoples eyes to adopt a pet and give them the love they deserve :)

  • this is so sad :'(

  • We are ALL animals. Please, do not disregard the value of any life form. I deeply support pet care and this is an EXCELLENT project by the Ad Council. Being a pet parent is one of the best reasons to enjoy each day! Cherish your cats, dogs, hamsters, fish, birds, pigs, lizards, or other fun additions to the family! Adopt and care for your pets! They will not leave you lonely or unloved!

  • That's such shit. Having a pet is like having a child (it might sound crazy to some people) but I had a cat named Wishes when I was little, we got him when I was 3, my parents divorced at 8 and we took him with us. The neighborhood we lived in got really bad so we moved again when I was 14, he went with us. He lived with us in our new home until we had to put him down at 19 (his age) Pets need love, care and genuine devotion. If you're not in it for the long haul then don't have a pet.

  • this commercial makes me so sad :,(

  • This is so terribly sad; the little cat still smiling even after the bars drop down. If I couldn't bring my pets, I'd just have to stay put.

  • @CelesteK I think he couldn't take the cat because there wasn't any room.

  • 0:19 made me cry.

  • Wow, I just saw this. I can't believe how sad it was. It makes me wants a cat. :)

  • Well, this should be a hard learned lesson. Don't take a new job unless the place that you're going to will allow you take your pets with you. :(
