So I believe the way it goes, based on history of first appearance.. Punk -> Goth -> Emo.

And by the way, scene or emo people don't have to be gay or lesbian to be apart of the stereotype. In fact, quite a few people in Heavy Metal are gay themselves. Rob Halford (vocals Judas Priest), the vocals of Gorgoroth (Norwegian Black Metal band), they are both gay, and popular as hell.

In some cases, I believe some forms of more common, easier-to-listen-to Metal maybe also be considered emo, though it may seem almost anything of a somewhat negative, vengeful, even dark nature could also be considered "emo" as well. I used to hate Metal, but I love it. If you take away the lyrics to all music and leave the mechanics of it to remain, you might be able to actually see what people were trying to achieve, thus hopefully attaining at least a small appreciation for all music.

Heavy Metal (or just Metal) has been around longer than ANY person who considers or looks "emo" or "scene". The roots of it can be heard as far back as Anthrax, Metallica (of course), Slayer, and Megadeth, though those are more specifically Thrash Metal. Death and Black are more extreme versions than Thrash is, and more morbid as they involve themes of death, even satanism. It takes a strong ear to withstand it, and a mature mind to not get brainwashed into the mediocre cults that spawn from it.
