A TV program from the early 60s featuring Julius Baker, Vladimir Sokoloff & David Soyer (cellist of the Guarneri Quartet) in a program of the Poulenc Flute Sonata - at the time a brand new piece! - and the Villa Lobos Jet Whistle.
Apologies for the audio quality. A problem from the 8 mm master.

  • Julie was just the best flute player ever: Beautiful tone with incredible variety of color and intensity, flawless even technique and an ease of expression that belies the difficulty of what he is playing. The music just flows.

  • I find him to be the deepest most soulful flutist ,it's all in his tone. He's a man's flutist.hehe

  • although the sound quality is poor, the musicianship comes through - thank you for posting this. Would love to see more Baker on YouTube for the fluteworld, young and old, to enjoy and get ideas from.

  • i really wish I was flutist at the time Julius Baker was alive.

An absolutely wonderful video, but it's a shame the sound quality is poor.

  • I heard Julius Baker rehearse in an apartment in Chicago with a quartet many years ago. His flute sound and quality of playing was beyond fantastic. I could never quite understand how he made the flute sound like he did-it is distinctive and different from any other flutist I've ever heard.

  • I keep remembering Julie offering me some of his honey, LOL! He was always one of my faves, thank you for adding these to youtube. Where are they from??

  • it's a shame the sound quality is not.

cause julie has the most amazing sound in the world, i remember trying to imitate him in our lessons... lets just say i gave up!

this vid is a jewel tho.
